Application security is one of the most challenging aspects of Internet security.
Put simply, application level security ensures that Internet applications interact with end users only in ways that were intended by the application's developers. Application level security is focused on preventing the unauthorized use of an eBusiness' resources or customer information by hackers attempting to gain access to the eBusiness network directly through the application itself. Application level hacks typically exploit weaknesses in HTML coding, Common Gateway Interfaces (CGIs), or in third party products such as web servers or scripts.
Damaging malicious-code attacks, the maturing of intrusion prevention technologies and other factors will drive IT security organizations to take a more aggressive approach to IT security in 2005.
Online application security will emphasize deploying the most basic and stable online application security standards. Caution in online application deployment is necessary because of old attacks beeing rendered useless by smart defenses and hereby force hackers to move to new territory.
Predictions say, at most, one in five deployments through 2006 will be driven by complex application- and business models or high level security requirements that will prompt the use of higher level application security standards and auditing.
"Securing Web applications needs to be a key element of every company's overall IT security plan."
John Pescatore
Vice President of Research, Information Securituy at Gartner Grop
"2005 is the year when internet crime came of age, the distinction between the attack types began to blur and hackers' targets became more focused."
